Eye Care for Women & Children (ECWC) — A Comprehensive Eye Care Program

Eye Care for Women & Children (ECWC) — CRUD Bangladesh project

In 2026 the German Embassy in Dhaka awarded CRUD a Small-Scale Project grant for “Eye Care for Women & Children” — ECWC for short, and “A Comprehensive Eye Care Program” on the banner that hangs at its camps. Over the seven months from May to November 2026 the project takes vision screening into 24 primary schools and, alongside the children, reaches women and older people in the same communities.

The project aims to reach 10,700 people: 7,200 schoolchildren across those 24 schools, and 3,500 women, children and older adults in rural and tea-garden communities. By 27 September 2026 the team had held 42 camps (22 in schools and 20 in rural areas), seen 3,378 school students and 2,321 rural patients, trained 80 school teachers and 18 community vision screeners, and provided 449 pairs of spectacles, 128 of them free. These are interim figures from CRUD’s report to the Embassy.

Camps are set up inside school rooms, with a registration and examination table under the ECWC banner. Pupils take their sight test holding their screening cards, and women and older patients from the community are examined at the same camps. The banner names the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Dhaka and CRUD as sponsors, and AMRI — the Akhter Medical & Research Institute eye hospital in Habiganj — as organiser.
